NATIONAL NUMBERS

 

Every country has their own national numbers that indicate to the historic date or important things. I'll share you some random numbers which represent Indonesia.

Sumpah Pemuda (The Youth Pledge) was a declaration made on 28 October 1928 by young Indonesian nationalists at a conference in the then-Dutch East Indies. They proclaimed three ideals, 1 motherland, 1 nation and 1 language. The pledge are:

Firstly, We the sons and daughters of Indonesia, acknowledge one motherland, Indonesia


Secondly, We the sons and daughters of Indonesia, acknowledge one nation, the nation of Indonesia


Thirdly, We the sons and daughters of Indonesia, uphold the language of unity, Indonesian


In addition, Indonesia has 1 national flag which is known as Sang Saka Merah Putih (The Sacred Red and White), 1 national emblem Garuda Pancasila and 1 national anthem Indonesia Raya.

The Indonesian archipelago geographically stretches across four time zones from UTC+7 in Banda Aceh to UTC+9 in Western Papua. However, Indonesian government only recognizes 3 time zones in its territory : 
  • Western Indonesian Time - seven hours ahead (UTC+7) of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) 
  • Central Indonesian Time - eight hours ahead (UTC+8) of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
  • Eastern Indonesian Time - nine hours ahead (UTC+9) of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) 
The boundary between the western and central time zones established is a line running north between Java and Bali through the center of Kalimantan. The border between central and eastern time zones runs north from the eastern tip of Timor to the eastern tip of Sulawesi.

Pancasila is the official philosophical foundation of Indonesia. Pancasila consists of two Old Javanese words (originally from Sanskrit) 'panca' meaning 5 (five) and 'sila' meaning principle. It comprises five principles held to be inseparable and interrelated:
  1. Belief in the one and only God 
  2. Just and civilized humanity
  3. The unity of Indonesia
  4. Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations amongst representatives
  5. Social justice for all the people of Indonesia

'Belief in the one and only God' is the first principle of Indonesia's philosophical foundation, Pancasila. A number of different religions are practiced in the country and their collective influence on the country's political, economic and cultural life is significant. The Indonesian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion. However, the government only recognized 6 official religions : Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism

The Indonesia presidency was established during the formulation of 1945 constitution by Badan Penyelidik Usaha Persiapan Kemerdekaan Indonesia (BPUPKI), a research body for the preparation of Indonesian independence. On 18 August 1945, Panitia Persiapan Kemerdekaan Indonesia (PPKI) which was created on 7 August 1945 to replace BPUPKI, selected Sukarno as Indonesia's first president. Since then, Indonesia has 6 presidents who elected by Indonesian people.
  • Sukarno with Mohammad Hatta as vice president.
  • Suharto with Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX, Adam Malik, Umar Wirahadikusumah, Sudharmono, Try Sutrisno, Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie as vice presidents.
  • Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie vacant vice president.
  • Abdurrahman Wahid with Megawati Sukarnoputri as vice president.
  • Megawati Sukarnoputri with Hamzah Haz as vice president.
  • Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono with Jusuf Kalla, Boediono as vice presidents.
  • Joko Widodo with Jusuf Kalla as vice president.

In Indonesia, 16 digit number is used as a unique number for each citizens. It's known as Nomor Induk Kependudukan. The number is given to all Indonesian citizen. The format is PPRRSSDDMMYYXXXX where PP is 2 digits province code, RR is 2 digits regency or city code, SS is 2 digits sub-district code, DDMMYY is date of birth and XXXX is 4 digits computerized number. The number is stated in Indonesian identity card.

The proclamation of Indonesian Independence was read at 10 am on Friday 17 August 1945. The declaration marked the start of the diplomatic and armed-resistance of the Indonesian National Revolution, fighting against the force of the Nedherlands until the later officially acknowledged Indonesia's independence in 1949.

There are 34 provinces in Indonesia, eight of which have been created since 1999 namely North Maluku, West Papua, Banten, Bangka-Belitung, Gorontalo, Riau Islands, West Sulawesi and the latest province to be created was North Kalimantan in late 2012. 

Five of provinces have special status which are Aceh for the use of Saria Law as the regional law of the province, Yogyakarta for being governed in an ancient monarchy system, Papua for implementation of sustainable development, West Papua for granting implementation of sustainable development and Jakarta for country's capital.

Volcanoes in Indonesia is part of The Pacific Ring of Fire. There are 150 active volcanoes in Indonesia which are grouped into six geographical regions, four of which belong to the volcanoes of Sunda Arc trench system. The remaining two groups are volcanoes of Halmahera, including its surrounding volcanic islands, and volcanoes of Sulawesi and Sangihe Islands. The latter group is in one volcanic arc together with the Philippine volcanoes.

There are over 300 ethnic groups in Indonesia with 95% of those are Native Indonesians ancestry with the largest ethnic group is Javanese who make up 41% of the total population.

Indonesia has 521 natural lakes and over 100 reservoirs, covering approximately 21.000 km2. The total volume of water held is approximately 500 km2. The largest lake, by both area and volume, is Lake Toba in North Sumatra. It holds 240 km3 of freshwater and it's the largest lake body in Southeast Asia and the largest volcanic lake in the world. Indonesia has 3 of the 20 deepest lake in the world, Lake Matano (590 m) and Lake Poso (450 m) both in Sulawesi and Lake Toba (505 m) in Sumatra. The only lake in Indonesia having a cryptodepression (the bottom of the lake is below sea level) is Lake Matano and Lake Gunung Tujuh is the highest lake in Southeast Asia.

About 742 living languages are spoken in Indonesia but united by the official national language Bahasa Indonesia which is used in commerce, administration, education and the media.

According to a 2002 survey by National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), the Indonesian archipelago has 18,307 islands. 8.844 islands have been named with 922 of those permanently inhabited.

Indonesia's total area is 1,919,440 square kilometers (land: 1.826.440 km2 , inland water: 93.000 km2) makes Indonesia the world's 16th largest country in terms of land area.


240,000,000
The population of Indonesian is about 240,000,000 with 58% living in Java, the world's most populous island. The population is expected to grow to around 262 million by 2020 and 293 million by 2050.
